Find a Job You Like Before You Quit Everything for a Business

We all have to start somewhere, and for many of us, the dream is early retirement. That’s great. But what if, instead of aiming to retire early, you could find a job you actually enjoy?

When I started my agency in 2011, it was simple. One client led to another, and before I knew it, I was running a small business. I loved the work—meeting clients, brainstorming creative ideas, and crafting campaigns. It was exciting. Back then, I was a one-man show, managing a few invoices, hopping between coffee shops, and enjoying leisurely lunches.

Then came my first big client, and with it, my first part-time employee—a student from one of my college branding classes. He stayed for four years, and together, we built something great. Another big client followed, then another. More employees. An office.

By the time we were renting a WeWork space, I was working 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., every day, with only weekends to squeeze in a few extra hours. The work that had once fueled me—creative brainstorming, writing, teaching—was now buried under finance, management, hiring, and training.

It wasn’t burnout; it was a realization: I was doing more of the same, but it wasn’t taking me where I wanted to go.
